Vision for Literacy
Our vision is to develop literate students who can independently read complex texts; produce complex, nuanced, and purposeful writing; listen attentively; speak effectively; acquire a wide-ranging vocabulary; and use language efficiently.
Beliefs for Literacy
1. Literacy is best learned in authentic situations.
2. Students must be given varied and extensive opportunities to read, write, speak, listen, and think about texts in order to prepare them for success in college, career, and citizenship.
3. Students should read and think critically about multiple types of texts and media.
4. Students learn through writing both in response to reading and as a creative process.
5. To become effective communicators, students must interact with complex texts and ideas.
6. Reading and writing are essential components of learning in all classrooms and content areas.
7. Instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, and vocabulary must be a shared responsibility within schools.
8. All Hamilton County teachers are literacy leaders and utilize practices that support our vision to develop literate students in their classrooms.
